RE: Joint Biochemistry and Biophysics Program Retreat on Friday, October 5 and Saturday, October 6, 2007

The 14th Annual Fall Retreat for the Division of Biology and Biomedical Sciences Programs in Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics will be held from the afternoon of Friday, October 5th through Saturday, October 6th at Trout Lodge of the YMCA of the Ozarks. The retreat is free to all students, postdocs, faculty, and research personnel in labs with an affiliation in either the Biochemistry Program or the Molecular Biophysics Program. In addition, free attendance is offered to all 1st-year Ph.D. and 1st/2nd-year MSTP students who would like to meet members of these two programs and learn more about their research.

The retreat will begin in the early afternoon of the 5th with a session of student research talks and a keynote address. Friday evening will include a second session of student research talks; a poster session before and after dinner, presented by members of the program-affiliated labs; and an informal mixer at the end of the night. A third session of research talks is scheduled for Saturday morning. In addition to our “official” activities, the Lodge offers, weather permitting, a variety of outdoor activities including soccer and football fields, a lake with row boats and canoes, tennis, walking/hiking trails, and an indoor gym for basketball and volleyball. The Trout Lodge facilities are located near Potosi, MO at the edge of the Mark Twain National Forest, about 90 minutes southwest of St. Louis by car. We assume everyone will be able to find their own transportation, so you should try to arrange to carpool with several of your colleagues. Meals (Friday dinner, Saturday breakfast and lunch) will be provided at the Lodge.
Please note: Lunch on Friday is not included.

If you are interested in attending, please return the attached registration form to Melissa Torres in the Division Office (email: torresm@dbbs.wustl.edu or campus mail: Box 8226). Space is limited! Prompt return of the form is important since we need to get an accurate head count in order to finalize the room reservations. Deadline to sign up for the retreat is September 7, 2007. Potential speakers will be contacted shortly. It is strongly encouraged that all students in their 3rd year and higher present a poster at the poster session. Persons presenting a poster or interested in giving a talk should indicate this on the registration form. (Please note: Talks will be selected from student and postdoc registrants.) Further information, the final program, and directions to the Lodge will be distributed later.

FACULTY: Please share this invitation with the postdocs in your lab.

We hope that everyone will plan now to be there in October to help us turn the retreat into one of the highlights of the Fall term!
